William "Bill" Shannon died in the early morning hours of Monday, September 23rd 2019. He had recently moved to The Arbors in Shelburne from his son Terences home in Montpelier after a long struggle with dementia. He leaves behind seven children and one sister. Born on June 12, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Margaret (Sheehan) Shannon, Bill was one of 9 siblings. Bill attended schools in Brooklyn and New Jersey. At 14 he left home to attend Seminary school in Pennsylvania. Returning to New Jersey a few years later, he was reunited with fellow classmates, one being Virginia "Ginny" (Moss) Shannon, his future wife. They married on January 21, 1955. Bill worked many years as a stagehand for Broadway Theaters and ABC Studios in Manhattan. In 1968, with seven children at the time, Bill and Ginny moved to Montpelier, VT where Bill continued for a year to work for the theater coming home on weekends when the job allowed. In 1969 wanting time with his wife and children, Bill quit the theater and worked at St. Augustines Church until 1982 when he had open heart surgery. After his surgery he enjoyed being at home spending time raising his eighth and youngest child. He enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He assisted with funerals and Masses at both St. Augustines and St. Monica Churches. Bill is survived by his three daughters: Laureen Wells of Calais, Therese Sanchez of California, Michelle Lavallee of Barre Town, and four sons: Kevin Shannon of Barre City, Martin Shannon of Williamstown, Russell Shannon of Berlin, and Terence Shannon of Montpelier; his grandchildren, Mark Shannon and Paul Shannon of Texas, Andrew Shannon of Berlin, Joseph Carriveau of East Montpelier, VT, Paul Lavallee of Barre Town, Matthew Lavallee of Alaska, Lacey Lavallee of Calais, Olivia Sanchez of CA, and Noah Sanchez of CA. Bill was pre-deceased by his wife Virginia "Ginny" Shannon in 2015 and son William Jr in 2007. A Funeral Mass will be held for Bill on Monday, September 30th at 11am at St Augustines Church in Montpelier followed by a burial next to his wife in the Waterbury Center Cemetery. Both Bill and Ginny were strong supporters in St. Judes Charity.
