Barre, VT
William J. Saliba, 90, of Washington Street in Barre, died on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Central Vermont Medical Center.
He was born in Barre, VT, on July 25, 1926, the son of Joseph and Jennie (Abuisi) Saliba. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1944. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United State Army Air Corp, where he served his country during World War II, as a control tower operator until his honorable discharge in 1946.
On August 30, 1947, he married Joyce (Richardson) Saliba. She predeceased him on April 18, 2003.
In 1946, his work career started with Green Mountain Power. After 9 years he left and joined Metlife as an agent in their Burlington, VT office. He spent three successful years as an agent and was promoted to assistant manager of the Bennington office in 1958. Following eight years in Bennington, he was promoted to the Field Training Division in 1966. In 1967 he was appointed to the District Sales Manager of the Fitchburg, MA off and held that positon until his retirement in 1984.
In 1962, he was awarded the coveted Charter Life Underwriter Designation, (CLU), by the American College of Life Underwriters.
He was active in community service. In Fitchburg, he served on the Salvation Army Citizens Advisery Board, served as a Director on the Board of the United Way of North Central Mass. He was a member of the Fitchburg Rotary Club, American Society of C.L.U's, and the National Association of Life Underwriters.
His recreational interest included Tennis, Golf, and Trout Stream Fishing.
Survivors include his son; Michael Saliba of Suffield, CT; sisters, Gloria Stroutsos of Barre, Mary Perrault of East Barre, and Rita Portalupi of Bow, NH; grandchildren, Jennifer Saliba of Manchester, NH, Ashley Saliba of Vietnam, Joseph Saliba of Vietnam, and Michelle Saliba and her daughter, Ava, of Cranston, RI; and his dear friend, Collete Carbonneau of Barre.
He was predeceased by his wife and a son, David Saliba in 2002.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held 3:00 pm on July 25, 2017 at the Worcester Mountain Cemetery in Worcester, VT.
