Walter L. Champine, 78, a longtime resident of Shady Rill Road, Middlesex died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Pittsford, VT on January 13, 1931 the son of Lawrence & Alice (Barnard) Champine. He attended schools in Pittsford and graduated from Pittsford High School in 1949. Walter later studied agriculture at Vermont Agriculture School in Randolph.
Walter married Shirley Skirry on November 15, 1952 at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54 during the Korean War.
Following his war service, Walter worked for Cross Bakery in Montpelier and several years as milk deliveryman for Jackson Dairy when they delivered dairy products directly to people's homes. His latest employment was a truck driver and deliveryman for Capital Candy Company of Barre.
Walter was a volunteer firefighter, and a longtime member of the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department. As a hobby he enjoyed tinkering and repairing automobiles. Walter also sang with the former Barber Shoppers.
Walter is survived by his wife, Shirley of Middlesex; daughter, Ann Krom and her husband, Stephen of Kingston, NY; son, Joe Champine and his wife, Keri of Worcester; grandchildren, Nicholas & Jeremy Krom, and Samantha & Sydney Champine; brothers, Donald Champine of Florence, VT and Norman Champine of Dorset, VT.
Walter was predeceased by a son, David on March 6, 2009.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 13th, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. A reception will follow the Mass and burial will take place in Middlesex Center Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
