Walter Baldwin, Sr., 81, of Montpelier, VT died in his home on March 28, 2018 shortly following a fight with bone cancer. With the assistance of hospice care, he passed peacefully on a sunny warm spring afternoon. Walter is survived by Susan Barton, who is the mother of his children and life partner of 38 years, two direct descendants; Crystal and Walter, Jr., three stepchildren; Tin, SueAnne and Jennifer, his sister Wauline, and many nieces and nephews. In his final years, he was proud to meet his two granddaughters, who joined the ranks of his six step grandchildren and step great granddaughter. Though he often told stories of his dreams to be a snowbird, he stayed in Vermont because he most cherished time spent with family. He also enjoyed visiting his sister, who he nicknamed "bunny," and her husband in Florida. His happiest moment was becoming a father. He spent many days reminiscing about a family vacation to Walt Disney World, holidays spent with relatives in Connecticut and his late mother Christine Baldwin, and time spent with his predeceased best friend and longtime neighbor Jim Davis. Walter was a dominant source of strong and stable support for all who were close to him. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as an aircraft mechanic. He viewed enlisting in the service as a great opportunity. Although his greatest hobby was fixing cars, for trade he preferred driving. He worked for years with Lacillade Lumber Company as a truck driver, and then upon retirement continued to work for Granite Importers. Before trucking, he helped build Interstate 89, and was a granite polisher at Rock of Ages. He had many hobbies and interests, including motorcycle riding, hunting, and upholstering. He was a member of the American Legion for 43 years, Teamsters, the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, and a local hotrod club. His 1927 Ford Panel Van won 18 car show trophies. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 7th at 1:00 pm at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier, VT.
