Virginia J. Bunning, 96, formerly of 171 Main Street, Montpelier, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 at the Woodridge Nursing Home.
She was born on November 29, 1913 in Cedarhurst, NY, the daughter of Frank R. and Eliza W. (Pettit) Jennings. She was educated in the Cedarhurst Elementary School and Lawrence High School on Long Island, NY. After High School she attended secretarial school where she received a secretarial certificate. Following her graduation Virginia worked for her parents at the F. R. Jennings Pharmacy, in Hewlett, NY, until April of 1943 when she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Virginia was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in September of 1945.
On March 15, 1944, Virginia married Henry F. Bunning at her parents home on Long Island, NY. They made their home in Jamaica, NY from 1944 until 1973 when Henry passed away. She then moved to Cedarhurst, NY. In 1994 she moved to Montpelier to be closer to her Daughter, Son - in - law, and grandchildren.
Virginia was an active member of the Alter Guild and was recently honored at the Christ Church in Montpelier for her 75 years of involvement with the Guild. She had also been active in Victoria Congregational Church and Trinity-St. John's Church, both in NY. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Head of Women's Fellowship, a member of the Waves National, the Eastern Star, and the Vermont Association of the Blind.
Virginia was especially fond of Sunday dinners that she shared with her family, and will be greatly missed especially on Sundays.
She leaves behind her daughter, Dorothy Redmond, and her husband Mark of Montpelier; her son, Edward Bunning, and his wife Kathy of San Diego, CA; her grandson, Mark H. Redmond , his wife Jennifer, and their children Brian and Brenna of Jericho, Vermont;her grandson, David M. Redmond, his wife Marla and their children Matthew and Eliza of East Barre; and a sister, Marion Plantamura,of Newtown Square, PA as well as many nieces and nephews.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Henry, her brother, Theodore R. Jennings, her brother, David A. Jennings, her sister, Dorothy Charleton, her sister, Lois Kahkonen, and her grandson, Brian E. Redmond.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at the Christ Church in Montpelier.
