Obituary

East Montpelier, Thelma L. Welch, age 97, and a life time resident of East Montpelier, Vermont, passed away at the CVMC, in Berlin, VT on April 16, 2018. Thelma or "Thel" as most called her will be sadly missed by all who knew, met and loved her. She was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was born in Plattsburg, New York on February 27, 1921, to Silas and Mabel (Frederick) Loso and was the youngest of five children. Soon after Thelmas birth the Family moved to East Montpelier, VT, where her father and mother established a large dairy farm. All five children graduated from East Montpelier Village School which now houses the East Montpelier Town Offices. Thelma attended Goddard Seminary in Barre, VT and was a very active member of the Girls Basketball Team, Glee Club, and achieved the "Outstanding Pianist Award" while she was a student at the Seminary. In her early 20s she became Assistant Manager of the "Grand Union Grocery Store" in Barre, VT, before marrying Lloyd A. Welch on October 4, 1944, at Saint Monica Parish in Barre, VT. During part of her marriage, she became employed by the "Rock of Ages Capacitor Plant" and soon became the "Night Supervisor". After the death of her Husband Lloyd, in 1959, she became employed by "Harrys Discount Store in Berlin, VT for 27 years and upon her retirement, received an "Achievement Award" for her managerial skills. Thelma was an active member of the "Catholic Daughters of America" Court Saint Monica for 52 years and in her later years was a member of Saint Augustine Parish in Montpelier, VT. Thelma loved nature, gardening, fishing, camping, writing and reading poetry, cooking, arts and crafts, antiquing and watching her Children, Grandchildren and great -grandchildren grow. Survivors include; a daughter, Michele Guyette and her husband, Wesley Guyette of Woodbury, VT; sons, Patrick of South Barre, VT and Robert of East Montpelier, VT with who she shared a home with for the past 14 years of her life; grandsons, Andre Welch and family of Cheshire, CT, Dustin Welch and family of Plainfield, VT; granddaughters, Megan Kelly and family of Randolph, VT, Melanie Tessier and her husband of Northfield, VT, Nealsa Spooner and her husband of South Barre, VT, six great- grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Thelma is predeceased by her Father and Mother, Husband Lloyd Welch, Daughter Melinda Saia and her Husband Boynton Saia, Jr., Brothers Wilfred, Willard, Octave, her Sister Olive Budrow and her Husband Leroy Budrow and Robert Loso Sr. There are no calling hours. Committal prayers will be offered 11:00 am on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the Plainmont Cemetery in East Montpelier. In lieu of flowers the Family requests that all contributions be made to Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
