Obituary

Sylvia E. Murray, 73, formerly of 282 Main Street, Montpelier, VT died peacefully on July 5, 2017 at Woodridge Rehabilitation Center at 4:35 p.m. Miss Murray had been courageously battling several health issues for many years. Born on September 18, 1943 in Montpelier, Sylvia was the first child and only daughter of Sherwood C. and Helen (Corry) Murray. As a child Sylvia attended the schools in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1962. In her youth Sylvia enjoyed traveling and camping with her family. She was very interested in learning about the towns in Vermont and memorized the routes and roads in the state. She began her collection of postcards in her teens. She also enjoyed animals, especially her pet dogs. Sylvia had an active memory and was extraordinary remembering numbers, dates, and maps. Up until her death, Ms. Murray could give you directions without any hesitation. Sylvia knew everyone by name and could easily remember relationships and birthdays. For most of her life Sylvia sent hundreds of cards to family and friends for their birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas. She cherished her friends and family and was a friend to many. Except for one year of her life, Sylvia lived with her parents and was helpful in many ways. Ms. Murray was an active member of First Baptist Church in Montpelier. Sylvia was a member of the choir for decades. For many years she served as the Sunshine Committee chair, sending greetings to members and missionaries. Sylvia also was a member of the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir for 17 years, often inviting many to the concerts. With her mother Sylvia was a member of the Montpelier Senior Center. After high school Sylvia had a 43- year career in the Food Service Industry. She began her work at the Mayo Nursing Home for two years in Northfield, VT then moved to the kitchen at Vermont College for 29 years. Ms. Murray then worked for National Life Insurance Co. for 12 years until her retirement in 2004. Sylvia persevered through many situations and bad weather to be at work faithfully. Sylvia had several hobbies and collections. She made many albums of postcards. Sylvia liked to collect mugs. She also loved stuffed animals. Many remember Sylvia as a determined photographer who never missed a chance to snap pictures at gatherings. Ms. Murray also enjoyed handwriting copies of the Bible and watching television in her sitting room. At the two nursing homes where Sylvia spent her last years she was a very popular resident. Both Berlin Rehab and Woodridge made her a volunteer member of their staffs. She fed the birds, enjoyed every activity offered and knew all staff and residents by name. Visitors had to schedule their visits around Sylvia's very busy schedule. She brought joy and laughter to many people. Ms. Murray is predeceased by her parents and her brother Raymond S. Murray. She is survived by her younger brother Rev. Stanley A. Murray and his wife Martha B. Murray. Her sister in law Cheryl Grout Murray of Frisco, TX (formerly of Montpelier) also survives. Sylvia has been a very proud aunt to six nieces and two nephews and spouses and their 20 children who all loved their dear Aunt Sylvia. Many cousins survive Sylvia also. It is safe to say that anyone who met Sylvia loved her and appreciated her sweet smile and demeaner.
