Obituary

Paid obituary with picture Times Argus The World Plainfield, VT Sylvia Jane (Wolcott) Brett died on the evening of February 12th with her daughter at her side at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, VT. She was 87 years old. Sylvia was born on March 11, 1932, the daughter of Max and Florence (Cloe) Wolcott. She grew up amongst her six brothers and sisters helping their parents on the family farm in Colchester. She loved to recall these early years later in life, telling her children and grandchildren about the times when money was scarce but love and appreciation for what they had was plenty. She and her sisters would make their own paper dolls from the Sears catalog, and she still loved paper dolls even as a grandmother. Sylvia graduated from Burlington High School and went to work for the UVM admissions office. Later she moved to Montpelier and began to work for the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company where she stayed for many years. She worked evenings at the Tavern Inn as the hostess in the dining room. She had a garden every year until later in life, and canned string beans and tomatoes and other vegetables she grew. She would also gather strawberries in June, sour cherries in July, blackberries and blueberries in August and apples in the fall. Sylvia was known for her caring, patience, and generosity. This was especially evident in her relationship with her family. She married Leroy Brett on September 28th, 1980 and went from being the mother of an only daughter to sharing a home with her husband and his seven sons. She is remembered as a true "hockey mom" and loved to go to their games and cheer for the boys. She tried hard to be there to support her children, always putting others needs before her own. She saved all the letters and drawings she got from her grandchildren and kept them up on her wall to enjoy and so family visitors could see their work on display. Her kindness extended to animals as well- she took in many strays over the years and even kept a small supply of donuts for the neighborhood raccoons who would reach under the screen door for their treat. She put up a birdhouse for the tree swallows every spring until declining health prevented her from doing so. She cherished her time with her family, and also loved sewing, cooking, and the annual pilgrimage to the Williamstown chicken pie supper. She was predeceased by her husband Leroy, her parents, her brother Elwin and sisters Lida, Carol, Sandra and Leslie. She leaves behind her daughter Carren Warren and husband Steven, son Philip Brett and wife Andrea, son John Brett and wife Nancy, son Harold Brett and wife Jenn, son George Brett and wife Tonya, son Charles Brett and wife Jenny, son Wilson Brett and wife Michelle, and son Nathan Brett and partner Christine. She also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as her brothers David and Eben Wolcott.
