Our hearts are brimming as we announce the passing of Steven Paul Pitonyak on April 17, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Montpelier, Vermont. Born on September 21, 1948, Steve lived a life rich in experiences and accomplishments, touching many lives along the way.

Steve graduated from St. Monica's High School after the closure of St. Michael's High School and continued his education at Goddard College and Woodbury College. A dedicated civil rights investigator with the Vermont Attorney General's Office, he was committed to justice and fairness in his work. Prior to this role, Steve served as a private investigator for the law office of Jim Ritvo and shared his knowledge as a Co-Director and teacher in paralegal studies and Bioenergetics at Woodbury College.

A proud veteran, Steve served in Japan during the Vietnam War. Serving in the ASA, Army Security Agency, was one of the high points of his life. Steve was actively involved in his community, serving on Montpelier's Diversion Board for a number of years, organizing annual neighborhood events in the Meadow, such as the Luminaries at Christmas/Solstice and the renowned Meadow Party which featured the Talent Show—No Act Too Small.

Steve was a man of many passions. When he wasn't working to make a difference, you could find him enjoying the great outdoors by golfing, biking, skiing, or rollerblading. He was often seen walking in downtown Montpelier, offering hellos to the folks he knew. He was known by many as the "Mayor" of Montpelier.

Steve is survived by his beloved spouse, Jan Sandman, their daughter Lexi Sandman-Pitonyak, his grandson Adam and his loving siblings: David Pitonyak, Michael Pitonyak, Marsha Charron, and Jane Martineau, and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a family that will deeply miss his warmth, wit, and wisdom.

A Celebration of Life will be held in June, where family and friends can gather to celebrate Steve's life and share cherished memories. Details regarding date and time will be announced soon. Look on his Facebook page for details or contact Jan at jansandman@comcast.net

Steve's life was full and complete, deeply lived with absolutely no regrets. He was a man of deep kindness, love and humor. May he rest in peace.
