Stephen M. Cano, 86, passed peacefully away with his family at his side on Wednesday, January 16th.
Steve was born in Websterville on April 20th, one of seven children born to Nieves and Jacinto Cano and was fiercely proud of his Spanish heritage.
He attended schools in Montpelier and was a basketball star at Montpelier High School in 1939. According to an article in the Time Argus, his name will go down in MHS history as one of its most outstanding players.
He joined the navy and was a radioman on a sub chaser before becoming ill with malaria and then was stationed in California where he met the love of his life, Florence Studer. They were married in the Chapel by the Sea in San Francisco and returned to Vermont where they raised their family.
Steve was the produce manager at the A & P Store in Barre before purchasing Steve's Market on Barre Street in Montpelier. He retired in 1986 after running the successful market for 23 years. Steve loved his store and was a true people person reflected by the gathering place that Steve's Market became.
He loved traveling to Mexico and spent several winters there. He especially liked being able to speak Spanish and made many friends. He took up golf later in life and spent many happy summers playing at the Montpelier Elks Club with his good friend Howard Paxman.
Florence passed away in 1998 and Steve was fortunate enough to find love again and married Patricia Canavan in July of 2000. He was a member of St Augustine parish and a life time member of the VFW and Elks Club. He was a devoted and loving family man and his family meant the world to him.
Steve leaves behind his wife, Patricia; 3 sons: Stephen and his wife Jill, Victor and Edmund, and daughter Joyce and her husband George Allard; 4 grandchildren, Tracy Scribner and her husband Josh, Justin Cano, Anathea Rivera and her husband Brian, and Chanel Allard; 8 great grandchildren, Mallory, Jackson, Madyson and Preston Scribner and Skylar, Miaka, Isabella and Hadrien Rivera; step-children, Dawne and her husband Steve Smith, Sheila and her husband Jeff Keiner and Joe Canavan and his wife Amanda; 8 step-grandchildren, Chelsea and Shannon Smith, Jamie, Russell, Paige and Stella Keiner and Megan and Devin Canavan; 2 sisters Concha Buzzi and her husband Dario, Maria Bond and her husband Bob plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers Jacinto Cano, Louis Cano, his twin brother Victor Cano, sister Vicenta Bordas, and great granddaughter Allyson Scribner.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held 11:00 am on Monday, January 21, 2008 at St. Augustine Church in Montpelier.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641. His family is very grateful for the compassionate care he received.
