Obituary

Sidney F. Lawson, Jr., 83, of Montpelier, VT passed away peacefully at Central Vermont Hospital with his loved ones by his side on January 11, 2024. Sidney was a loving cousin, and devoted friend to many. He was especially proud to be a "grandfather" to Charlie, William and Ella, taking time to go to various sporting events, attending school performances, and spending holidays with the family. His gentle manner and kind soul touched all who knew him. His friendships spanned the globe.

Sidney was born on April 29, 1940 in Montpelier, VT to Fire Chief Sidney F. Lawson, Sr. and Ruth E. (Russell) Lawson. He was the youngest of three children, predeceased by his siblings Milan W. Lawson and Rev. Ronald C. Lawson, all proud seventh generation Vermonters from the shores of Nelson Pond. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Corinne Kelly Lawson and her son, Daniel.

Sidney attended schools in Montpelier and graduated high school in 1958. His love of theater started at an early age and continued throughout his life. He participated in a variety of productions in high school and continued after graduation through the local Shakespeare Festival productions. In the mid-60's, he was called to serve in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1969. On the GI Bill, he attended the Boston Conservatory where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater in 1972.

While continuing to pursue a career in theater, Sidney spent his summers waiting tables on Cape Cod, which enabled him to return to NYC to work on his craft. He cherished his years in NYC that followed, where he performed and instructed young actors. He was proud to have worked in various roles and productions, including Dracula and Chicago.

Sidney was the ultimate caregiver for those in need. In the early 80's he returned to Vermont to help care for his aging parents. He began working at the Department of Motor Vehicles while attending a Masters program at St. Michael's College part-time. He also remained involved in the local theater, working on several productions in the years that followed.

An avid traveler, Sidney visited many European countries and beyond. His favorite was Germany, which he visited many times and acquired a passion for the language. He was always seeking to expand his knowledge and education. After retiring from the DMV in 2002 he took several courses in German at UVM and a language school in Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany.

In addition to travel, Sidney had many interests and hobbies including antiquing, genealogy, skiing, and keeping up with local and world news. Yet, overall, what he cherished the most, was simply spending quality time with family and friends. Often on the coastline, as this former lifeguard loved the ocean as much as the fresh, crisp, Vermont air. He especially enjoyed "falling into" a local restaurant or a quaint cafe in Europe, where he could visit with those he loved. Forever the best storyteller, always with his hand cupping a hot (decaf) coffee, with "just a touch" of milk.

A private graveside service in the family lot will be held in the spring at the discretion of his family.

Arrangements are in the care of Guare and Sons Funeral Home of Montpelier, VT. Those wishing to express online condolences may do so at www.guareandsons.com.
