Shirley B. Lanza, 99 years of age, from Terrace Street, died on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Heaton Wood in
Montpelier.
She was born on February 12, 1925, the daughter of William and Rebecca (Muzeroll) Bonneau.
She graduated from Stevens High School in Claremont, NH in1943. After high school she attended the
University of New Hampshire, where she studied nursing and later became a Registered Nurse in 1946.
After graduating from nursing school, Shirley met and fell in love with Frank J. Lanza. They were married on
June 19, 1948.
In 1949 she and her husband moved to Superior, Arizona, where she worked as a Registered Nurse for the
Magma Copper Mining Company Hospital. Then, in 1955 she moved back to New England when her husband
began working, as a Geologist, for the Appalachian Sulfide Company in South Strafford, VT.
After moving to Montpelier in 1957, Shirley chose to stay at home, for several years, with her two children and
gradually returned to nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse in many different capacities and locations,
including in Emergency rooms, as a private duty nurse, as well as a floor nurse at both Heaton Hospital and
Central Vermont Medical Center. Her favorite was working as the school nurse for the Montpelier Union
School before retiring in 1986.
Shirley enjoyed boating, fishing, and spending the summers at her summer cottage in Blodgett's Landing, NH,
on Lake Sunapee. She and her husband, Frank, traveled extensively throughout Europe for 31 years and spent
winters in Florida for 25 years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and reading. While living in
Arizona, she belonged to the cultural society, Beta Sigma Phi. She loved music and would always have music
playing in her home. She also enjoyed playing tennis and bridge.
She was extremely blessed and happy with her beloved husband and two children.
Survivors include her sons, Robert W. Lanza and his wife Susan of Osprey, Florida, and Richard Lanza and his
wife Catherine of Worcester, VT. Her grandchildren include Jennifer Lanza of Lynn, MA., Dr. Amanda Lewis
and her husband Thomas of Waltham, MA, Ian Lanza, and his wife Jordon of Rowley, MA, Courtney Lanza and
her husband Matt of Jeffersonville, VT., and Stacey Roberts and her husband Eli of Brattleboro, VT; and 6
great-grandchildren, including Charlotte and Maxwell Lewis of Waltham, MA., Eliza and Zoe Lanza of
Rowley, MA., Lyra and River Roberts of Brattleboro, VT. and a new great grandchild is expected in June 2025.
There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be held at Augustine's Catholic Church on June 23, 2025, at 10:00 am, followed by interment at the Veterans Cemetery in Randolph, VT, at 1:00 pm.
