Ruth M. McKnight, 90, of Quesnel Drive, Montpelier died on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center. She was born on July 18, 1923 in Montpelier, VT, the daughter of James and Dora (Mayo) McDonald. On December 31, 1945, she married Robert McKnight in Montpelier.Mr. McKnight predeceased her on September 23, 1992. Ruth attended St. Michael's Grade School and graduated from St. Michael's High School in the class of 1940. She then attended nurse's training at Heaton Hospital Nursing School and worked there upon graduating. Ruth later went on to work as a telephone operator for many years for the New England Telephone Company and also when it became Verizon. Ruth enjoyed working as a secretary for Governor Philip A. Hoff during his years in office. She spent many years as a homemaker while working with Robert in their business, Automatic Vending Service. During the 1980's, they owned and operated the Jewelry Box gift store on State Street in Montpelier. After, she worked at the Central Vt. Council on Aging in Barre. Ruth was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Survivors include a son; Steven McKnight and his wife Janice of Essex Junction, VT and a daughter, Kathleen McKnight of Asheville, NC; five grandchildren, Nicholas and Jonathan Sanders, Lawrence Young Jr. and wife Cyndie, Todd Young and wife Elizabeth, Cherie Geddes and husband Gary; six great grandchildren; Damion and Morgan Young, Emily and Andrea Young, and Cameron and Allison Geddes. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on August 6th, Tuesday, 2:00 pm at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Calling hours will be from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm on Tuesday at Guare & Sons Funeral Home.
