Montpelier, VT Roy H. Flanders, 84, of Four Seasons Community Care Home in Northfield died peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2014. He was born in Fairfax, VT on May 26, 1929, the son of Gerald and Helen (Archambault) Flanders. He attended Bellows Free Academy of Fairfax until the necessity of his family's dairy farm required him to begin work at an early age. Roy worked a number of jobs including dairy farming and logging. He primarily worked as a sheet metal mechanic, first for the Norman C. White Company in Newington, CT and later for many years at the Middlesex Fire Equipment Company where he was Shop Foreman before a disability forced his retirement in 1978. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army, Tank corps from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953 with the rank of Staff Sargent. On July 2, 1955, he married Rebecca Ann Swenston in Hartford, CT. They later divorced. Roy was a participant of Project Independence in Barre, VT, where he was able to make many lasting friendships over the years. Survivors include his sons; Roy F. Flanders and his wife Rebecca of Conober, NC, Paul J. Flanders and his companion Corylinn Jenne of North Montpelier, VT, Robert L. Flanders of Salisbury, NC, Patrick R. Flanders and his wife Roni of Jamestown, NC and Lee A. Flanders of Plainfield, VT; Rebecca Ann (Swenston) Flanders, his former spouse of Salisbury, NC; sisters, Alberta Buroker of Ft. Arthur, TX and Lenna Flanders of Rutland, VT; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings; Ernest Flanders, Leola Flanders, and Lena Flanders, and a grandson Joseph Griffith. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the aids, nurses and residence of the Four Seasons Community Care Home, whom Roy considered his extended family. Calling hours will be held on from 6-8 pm, Friday evening, Jan. 10th at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier.
