Obituary

Roger Earl Sweet, 78 of the Northfield Road, Berlin died Friday, March 26, 2010 at Central Vermont Medical Center. He was born in East Corinth, VT on July 27, 1931 the son of Earl F. & Helen (Sterns) Sweet. He attended schools there and graduated from Bradford Academy in 1948. Following graduation he entered the United States Army serving from August 24, 1948 to his discharge on August 24, 1951. He played trumpet in the US Army Band and during the Korean Conflict he fought in the battle of Kunu ri and was awarded 3 bronze stars. Roger married Betty J. Emerson in East Corinth. They recently had their 59th wedding anniversary on March 16th. They have five loving children together. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed country & western music, loved horses, and his dog Dandy. Mr. Sweet was the manager for Singer Sewing Center in Rutland for many years. The family later moved to Montpelier. Roger worked on the service counter at the Montpelier Post Office from 1978 to his retirement in 1993. He also owned and operated Sweet's Real Estate which he ran from his home in Berlin. He was a member of VFW # 792 and the American Legion. Roger is survived by his wife, Betty of Berlin; 3 daughters, Charlene M. Hopkins and her husband, Michael of East Montpelier; Helen A. Bryan and her husband Shawn, of Berlin; Lisa J. Turner of Berlin; 2 sons, Howard E. Sweet of Waterbury and Paul R. Sweet of Barre; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Caroline Codling of Metter, GA; 2 brothers, Craig Sweet and his wife, Jean of Lebanon, NH and John Sweet and his wife, Marjorie of Williston, VT and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents and sister, Mayda and a brother, Monty. A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 3rd, at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. There will be no calling hours. Burial and military honors will be in the spring at Berlin Corners Cemetery.
