Robert G. Shambo, 68, of Sunrise Ave., died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, April 7, 2011.
He was born on April 5, 1943 in Hartford, CT, the son of Robert & Elma (Holmquist) Shambo.
Bob graduated from Montpelier High School in 1962 and later received an associates degree in business administration from the Albany Business College in Albany, NY.
In 1962, Bob enlisted into the US Navy, where he trained and served on submarines. He was assigned on the USS Stonewall Jackson submarine stationed in Groton, CT until his discharge in 1966. He volunteered his time on the board for "Flags for Veterans" Program in Barre Town and had an interest in World War 2 Aviation History.
On December 18, 1966, Bob was married to Linda Gero in Barre, VT. They have two children together, Bobby and Kathleen. He enjoyed spending time at his camp on Miles Pond and recently learned kayaking.
Robert worked as the Director of Information Technology for the State of Vermont, then for Central Vermont Medical Center for a period of years, and then again for the State of Vermont where he retired in 2005.
Bob was a member of the Barre Elks Lodge and former member of the Canadian Club. He served on the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management Board for several years. Bob was instrumental in organizing and was Captain of the "Neighborhood Watch Program" in Barre. He was especially fond of his animals, including his two dogs, Jessie and Jake.
Bob is survived by his wife, Linda Shambo of Barre; son Robert P. Shambo and his fiancé Valerie Tinker of Rockland, MA; daughter, Kathleen Shambo of Hobbsville, NC; grandson, James Marsha IV of Hobbsville, NC; and his mother, Elma Jurras of Montpelier.
He was predeceased by his step father, Henry Jurras and step brother, Steve Jurras.
Bob's wishes were to have no calling hours or funeral service. A committal will take place at the Berlin Corners Cemetery at a later date.
