Obituary

Montpelier, VT Robert Bernard Barnes, died on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Woodridge Nursing Home. He was born in Montpelier, VT on November 21, 1927, the son of Jabez and Pearl Crawford Barnes. He attended school in Montpelier and then spent time working at his uncle Harry Tracys farm on the country road, doing choirs. Robert started Bobs Trucking Service in Montpelier and continued this for 3 years. He then went into the dump truck business working for different towns in Central Vermont. On March 10, 1957, he started work for the City of Montpelier. He worked as a mechanic and snowplow operator and retired November 21, 1989 after 32 years of service to the city. After retirement he worked in his own garage, repairing and maintaining his own trucks and tractors and helping friends with some of theirs. Robert was always one to keep busy and loved to work on wood and metal. After his retirement he kept busy by sawing and cutting up wood. He bought logs from a logger and proceeded to saw them up and then split them into firewood and delivered loads to people who wanted it. A medical problem made him give this up. His next project was to build two wheel trailers. He built some from axle up and he refurbished ones that he found unuseable and made them roadworthy again. His health made him give this up, as well. Robert built a camp with his father on Curtis Pond and spent many years enjoying his family and friends there. He liked to fish and especially to deer hunt. He looked forward every year to go deer hunting with his friends in Brookfield. He got many deer over the years, one of which was mounted and named "George". "George" spent many years at camp and later at Roberts home in Montpelier. Robert was a long time member of the Trackmakers Snowmobile Club of Montpelier. He was the Trailmaster for the club for most of that time. He maintained trails by cutting and clearing, he helped build and maintain bridges, he put out trail signs before each season started and took them down when the seasons ended. He attended VAST meetings about keeping up to date on the trails. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Shirley Bolles of Fairlee, VT and Louise Barnes of Montpelier and Boynton Beach, FL. He is survived by cousins, nephews, and nieces in the Central Vermont area. He leaves his companion of 23 years, Carla Safford of Barre. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held 1:00pm on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the Cutler Cemetery in East Montpelier. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road-Berlin, Barre, VT 05641.
