East Montpelier, VT Richard "Richie" Craig Martin died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, August 18, 2019. He had been living with cancer for several months. Richard was born in Burlington, VT one of the four sons of Harold Martin and Doris (Curtis) Martin. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1969. He was known for his extraordinary creativity, which he channeled both into a love of wood carving and sculpting as well as business as a builder and general contractor. He owned his own contracting company, AD Building, for over 30 years. Richard married Phyllis Goodrich on June 26, 1981 in Medford, MA. Together they had two children: son David Martin, of San Diego, CA; and daughter Anna Martin of Burlington, VT. Richard and Phyllis were members of St. Augustines Church in Montpelier, VT and were also members of Notre Dame de Vie, a spiritual family within the Catholic Church, based on Carmelite spirituality and prayer, until her death in 2015. Richard remained active with St. Augustines as a member and provided his skills as a woodworker when asked. In addition to St. Augustines, Richard was also a member of the Montpelier Kiwanis Club. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his artistic skills and kindness. He leaves behind his son and daughter, two brothers: Danny Martin and wife Sharon, of Calais; and Rex Martin and wife Susie, of Boca Raton, Florida; his sister-in-law, Anne Kinley and husband Tom of Waterbury, VT; and his mother-in-law, Anne Goodrich, of Barre, VT; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Both of his parents and his eldest brother, Terry Martin, died before him. Calling hours will be held at Guare and Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier from 6-8pm on Thursday, August 22nd. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Augustines Catholic Church in Montpelier on Friday, August 23rd at 11am followed immediately by burial in Doty Cemetery in East Montpelier. A reception will follow the burial at The Old Meetinghouse Church adjacent to the cemetery.
