Obituary

Berlin, VT Raymond Bert Witham, 100, of Cedar Drive in Berlin, died on Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Woodridge Nursing Home. He was born one of eleven children to Bert and Eva (Ormsbee) Witham on May 29, 1910 in Graniteville, VT. He served in the United States Navy December 22, 1943 to his discharge on November 16, 1945. Raymond served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and Philippine Liberation during World War II and was assigned to the de 217 U.S.S. Coolbaugh. On May 8, 1936 married Ramona Mae Brickey in Waterbury, VT. Mr. Witham worked during the 1930's for the Civil Conservation Corp, (C.C.C.'s) at different construction sites in the area, Burlington, Waterbury and Montpelier. He later worked for many years for City of Montpelier and State Equipment Company as a mechanic and welder. After his retirement at 65, he continued to work as a welder for Neil MacKenzie in Springfield, VT. Ray had a large lawn mowing service for many years and moved snow for his customers with his snow blower until he was 94 years old. He had an incredible work ethic and enjoyed staying active and meeting people. He loved to dance, go camping and playing cards with family. Ray enjoyed racing his Hot Rods cars at Thunder Road, and the Northfield dirt track. He ultimately hired Ray Stiegles and Johnny Gammell to drive his cars for him. He is survived by a son, Bert R. Witham and his wife Barbara of Montpelier; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Witham and her partner Harold Snitzler of Palm Harbor, FL; five grandchildren, Douglas Witham, Jr. and wife Lori, Laura Witham and wife, Courtney, Philip Witham and wife Lydia, Raymond Witham and wife Mari Jo, and Jonathon Witham and wife Lisa; twelve great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; brother, Dean Witham and his wife, Marion of Berlin, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Ramona on October 31, 1990; son, Douglas Witham, Sr. on March 31, 1992; siblings, Lillian Witham, Myrta Fisher, Jennie Witham, Fern Blatchford, George Witham, Earle Witham, Mahlon Witham, Kenneth Witham, and Laurence Witham. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 2nd, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m, Thursday, at Guare & Sons Funeral Home.
