Obituary

Montpelier/Colchester, VT Rassoul Rangaviz passed away unexpectedly on December 2, 2018. He was born on May 23, 1957 in Ardabil, Iran to Horieh and the late Habib Rangaviz. He proved to be a promising student at an early age and joined the Navy to further his education. As an Iranian naval-cadet in the 1970s, he had the opportunity to come to the United States on a military scholarship. Without speaking any English, Rassoul packed up and moved to Northfield, Vermont to attend Norwich University. There, he learned English, completed a degree in accounting, and, most importantly, fell in love with Ann Lauzon of Barre, Vermont. Although they were only 18 and 21, Ann and Rassoul knew they had found something special in each other. But after only ten months, history intervened. As the Iranian Hostage Crisis played out in 1979, the United States government canceled all Iranian military exchange visas and Rassoul was forced to leave the country and return to Iran. For Ann and Rassoul, the separation only served to clarify the importance of their relationship. Not one to be deterred by an international crisis, Ann traveled to the church of Senator Patrick and Marcelle Leahy and begged Marcelle to help her find a way to bring Rassoul back to the States. Moved by the story, Marcelle and Senator Leahy helped Ann secure a fianc visa for Rassoul. On January 1981, Rassoul flew back to United States where an overjoyed Ann was waiting for him at J.F.K. Although Rassoul knew that he was returning on a fianc visa, Ann had another surprise for him at the airport: she had already booked the church where they would get married three weeks later, on Valentines Day 1981. From there, life moved quickly. Rassoul and Ann had two children, Sheilah and David, who they raised in Montpelier, Vermont. Rassoul rose to become the Chief Financial Officer of Copley Hospital, where he worked for over 20 years. Rassoul made friends everywhere he went: he formed a tight-knit group of Iranian friends in Vermont, he played cards with the same group of neighbors for over twenty-five years, and he was very close to his Copley Hospital family. His daughter, Sheilah followed in his footsteps and became a financial officer at a major hospital system. After attending Harvard Law School, his son Dave became an appellate public defender in Massachusetts. Rassoul walked his daughter down the aisle at her wedding to James Ensign and out-danced everyone at Daves wedding to Hannah Brennan. For the last two years, he has been Bubba to his first grandchild, Olivia. He is survived by his mother, two brothers, Mohammed and Bahman, his sister Nadia, six nieces and nephews, and many extended family members in Iran, whom he visited this past fall. He also leaves behind Anns very large family, who became his family. He was everyones favorite friend, everyones favorite card player, and everyones favorite family member. He will be missed terribly. Public calling hours will be 6 to 8pm on December 5 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home on 30 School St, Montpelier. The funeral will be held at St. Augustine Church on Barre St. Montpelier, Thursday December 6 at 11am. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Copley Hospital, 528 Washington Highway, Morrisville, VT 05661.
