Montpelier, VT Patricia (Dessureau) Mercier of Montpelier, VT died peacefully on Friday morning October 25th, 2019, one week shy of her 82nd birthday. Patricia was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 1st, 1937. She was one of 3 children born to Francis and Mildred (Buswell) Dessureau. Patricia attended schools in Montpelier and Barre, graduating from Spaulding High School in 1955 and Lasell Junior College (now known as Lasell University), in Newton, MA in 1957 with an Associates Degree in Business. While at Lasell she was on the crew team. She met Robert Mercier in January 1958 and they were married that same year on August 23rd at St Monicas Church in Barre. They raised 5 children together in Montpelier. While Bob worked for the Barre-Montpelier Railroad Company, Patricia worked for the Vermont Agency of Health and Social Welfare, and then when her children were in the early years of schooling she worked serving hot lunch in the Montpelier school cafeteria. She later worked first for the Browns Insurance Agency, and then as manager of the Direct Billing department at Vermont Mutual Insurance Group until her retirement in 1997. For several years, Patricia and Bob worked together at the Montpelier Recreation Department where many community children lovingly referred to them as 'Ma & Pa Mercier'. Patricia enjoyed playing tennis, going out to eat, and dancing with Bob. They began camping at Little River State Park in Waterbury in the early 1970s with their family. They spent many years going back year after year- a tradition their children and grandchildren continue to this day. Patricia and Bob enjoyed traveling together. They made many trips to the coast of Maine and Hampton Beach, NH, so that they could spend time at the ocean. Patricia was devoted to her family and loved nothing more than to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband Bob, Patricia leaves behind her five children: daughter Debbie and her husband Jim Ausmann of Barre, VT; son Michael and his wife Julie of Wilmington, MA; daughter Michelle and her husband Lou Bello of Vicenza, Italy; daughter Diane and her husband John Collier of West Berlin, VT; and daughter Chrissy and her husband Brian Martel of Berlin, VT; 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, her brothers Henri and David Dessureau, and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours for Patricia will be on Wednesday, October 30th from 6-8pm at Guare & Sons Funeral Home at 30 School Street, Montpelier, VT. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 31st at 11am at St. Augustines Catholic Church at 16 Barre Street, Montpelier, VT followed by a burial at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier. The family would like to offer a special thank you to all of the people at Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice who played a role in caring for Patricia during her time of illness, especially the hospice staff who helped care for her at home.
