Obituary

Patricia S. Carruth, 85, of 2 North Franklin Street, died Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, VT, where she had been a volunteer since its inception. Pat was born November 25, 1929 in Schenectady, NY, the youngest daughter of George and Victoria (Paskowska) Story. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1947. She attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and later graduated from Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene in Boston, MA in 1949. She was married to G. William Carruth on June 27, 1953 in Bellows Falls, VT. Pat worked as a dental hygienist for over 35 years and was a past president of the Vt. Dental Hygienists Association. For 27 of those years she worked for Dr. Caccavo, Dr. George and Dr. Koch in Barre, VT. She retired in 1991. Her faith carried her through life and she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church for over 50 years. While there she was a senior warden twice, an official greeter and a member of the vestry, worship, and discernment committees. Pat was a Lay Eucharistic Minister and a mentor to many in the parish. She started the Care Team and the Prayer Chain that reached out to those in the community in need. In 1996, Pat became visually impaired and at that time devoted her life to being an advocate and educator for others who were learning to live with eye sight disabilities. She was an active member of VABVI (Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired) where she was on the board for fifteen years and started PALS, a support group for the Barre/Montpelier area. She was involved with the Consumer Advisory Council and the Speakers, which educated others about their visual impairment and the products available to them. Special to her heart was going to schools to teach students about what it is like to lose your eyesight and how to help and understand this disability. Through her example, she gave others the courage to face challenges with grace. Survivors include her two daughters Kimberly Clark of Columbus, GA and Karyl Drew (Brian) of Hanover, NH, five grandchildren, Brendan, Colin and Topher Drew and Ryan and Kelly Carriss, three great-grandchildren Aiden and Ava Carriss and Kendra Jackson and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill and her two sisters, Barbara McMennamin and Janet Orvis of Bellows Falls. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 19 at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 64 State Street in Montpelier, VT 05602. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church or VABVI, 60 Kimball Street, South Burlington, VT 05403.
