Patience (Pat) Messier Candy, 77, of Terrace Street, Montpelier died Tuesday, August 6th at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
She was born on May 18, 1936 in Irasburg, Vermont, the daughter of Wilfred Preston Messier and Ila Mae (Mitchell) Messier and attended schools in Irasburg.
Pat was married to Ross Hoyt on June 21, 1959 in Irasburg, VT. Mr. Hoyt predeceased her. She was later married to William Robert "Bob" Candy on February 14, 1979. Mr. Candy predeceased her on Feb. 18, 1999.
Pat worked for 28 years at the Grand Union and Shaw's in Montpelier. She retired in March of this year.
Pat and her constant companion, her dog Sidekick, loved nature and the outdoors. Pat enjoyed flowers and gardening, cooking and collecting cookbooks. She spent many hours watching deer, chipmunks, and especially birds and her precious hummingbirds.
Survivors included three step-daughters, Laurel Farnum and her husband, Wally of Montpelier; Linda Stanke and her husband John of New Mexico; Paula Cody and her husband, Bill of Montpelier; step-son, William Robert "Bill" Candy, II and his wife, Arlene of Georgia; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; 4 nieces and 3 nephews. Pat is also survived by a sister, Betsy Jane Slaven of Florida.
Pat was predeceased by two sisters, Josephine Hart and Mae Daigle.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held on Friday, August 9th from 2-4 p.m. at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier, VT.
