Oliver Steve Forrand, 89, of Main Street, died on Sunday, November 30th at the Woodridge Nursing Home with his family by his side. He had been a resident of Woodridge Nursing Home for the last five years.
He was born in Cabot, VT on July 3, 1925, the son of Stephen and Libbie (Gushea) Forrand.
Oliver married Madeline J. Relation on November 21, 1969 in Northfield, Vermont. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage until her death in August of 2010.
In 1941, at the age of 16, Oliver joined the United States Navy, serving 4 years during World War II and received an honorable discharge on January 17, 1946.
After his military service, he worked for The Northfield Woolen Mills as a shop foreman for the weaving department until the mill closed in 1974. He then worked for Malden Mills Inc. for several years until he retired in December of 1987.
Upon retirement he took up baking, taking great pride in making weekly treats for his granddaughter, Kristin and her friends.
He enjoyed reading, cribbage, playing golf and fishing. He was also a member of the Northfield and Montpelier country clubs for a number of years.
His other sports interest included baseball and football with an eye on the college level teams.
He was a member of St. Augustine's Parish in Montpelier, VT.
Oliver is survived by his two daughters, Mary Joanne Dukette of Montpelier, VT; and Nancy Tassey and husband Scott of Calais, VT; granddaughter, Kristin Darcy and great granddaughters, Ella and Lily Darcy of Montpelier, VT; two grandsons, Mathew Tassey of Calais, VT; and Scott D. Tassey and fiancée, Desirae Baker and great granddaughter, McKenzie Tassey of East Montpelier, VT.
A Graveside service with Military Funeral Honors will be held in the spring at Calvary Cemetery in Northfield, VT.
