Obituary

East Montpelier, VT Norman Leo Ferland passed away June 12, 2012, at the Four Seasons Nursing Home in Northfield, VT with his children at his bedside. He was born on December 4, 1928 in Jonesville, VT, the youngest son of Romeo and Blanche (White) Ferland. The family moved to Montpelier where he graduated from St. Michael's High School. He later graduated from Boston University with a degree in journalism. In 1960, he married Virginia (Ginny) Adams, with whom he had four children. They divorced in 1978. To enable him to pursue his passions, hunting and fishing, he worked nights for Central Vermont Railways as a dispatcher until the early 60s. In 1964 he became the music director at St. Monica's High School in Barre for two years, leaving there to become choral director at Berlin Elementary School. He later became the Instrumental Music Director for Washington Northeast Supervisory Union (Cabot, Marshfield, and Plainfield) until his retirement in 1980. Thoughout the years he maintained his interest in music. During the 1960's he was a member of the Montpelier Chapter of the Barber Shoppers and served as its director. He also directed the summer band for the Wednesday night concerts on the porch of the Pavilion. Norman is survived by a sister, Mildred Brule; daughters, Monica Richardson of Berlin and Michelle Ferland of Colchester; son, John Ferland of East Haddam, CT; 4 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three siblings; Cyril, Donald, and his twin sister, Norma Perreault; and a daughter, Lisa. There will be no calling hours or funeral at this time.
