Obituary

Berlin, VT Nettie E. DeForge Miles, 86, formerly of the Northfield Road, Berlin and for many years a resident of Mayo Nursing Home died Monday, May 13, 2013. Nettie was born July 4, 1926 in Stuart, Florida the daughter of Daniel & Elvine (Obomsawin) Royce. As a young girl the family returned to Vermont and Nettie was raised in Waterbury Center and Moretown. She received her education at St. Michael's Grade School and St. Michael's High School. Nettie married Charles K. DeForge on April 10, 1944 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. They made their home and raised their family in Berlin. Charlie predeceased her on December 3, 1988. Nettie later married Henry C. Miles on August 25, 1990. They resided in Mallets Bay as well as Belleview, Fl for several years. Mr. Miles died in September 2000. Nettie's early employment included M.H. Fishman, McClellan's and The Children's Store. Nettie worked as a senior clerk in the retirement services division at National Life Insurance Company and retired with 26 years of service in 1986. She was a member of the Catholic Daughter of America, St. Augustine Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Green Mountain Motorcycle Club, VT Retreads Motorcycle Club, National Life Quarter Century Club, Retired Volunteer Senior Program, and AARP. Nettie was also very proud of her Native American Indian heritage and was a member of the Abenaki Reservation at Odanak, PQ, Canada. She was also known for her strong ties to the Vermont Folklife Center. Nettie's interest included hunting, camping, motorcycling, traveling, and a special fondness for Lake Champlain and Thompsons Point. Survivors include three daughters, Jeanne Brink of Barre; Joan Holmes of Madisonville, TN; and Joyce Bartlett of Sweetwater, TN; a son, Jeffrey DeForge of Adamant, VT; nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Nettie was predeceased by her siblings, Mae Blodgett, Myrtle Anthony, Edna Harrison, Ellsworth Royce and Henry Royce. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16th at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Guare & Sons Funeral Home.
