Obituary

Nancy Stevens Strong, 82, of Center Road, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin after an extended illness. Nancy was born at Heaton Hospital in Montpelier, Vt., Sept. 10, 1931, daughter of Neil L. Stevens and Arley (Hier) Stevens. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1949 and from Johnson State College in 1954. At college she performed her student teaching at the Center School in East Montpelier as well as Union Elementary School in Montpelier, where after graduation she taught first grade. On June 16, 1957, she married Frederick C. Strong of East Montpelier who was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. They lived in Mountain Home until the summer of 1958, when they were transferred to Ethan Allen AFB, Vt. Air Force assignments took them to Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Foundland, Maine, Nebraska and Labrador. Nancy was employed as librarian at the school on Goose Air Base, Labrador, and was a frequent substitute at the schools in Bellevue, Neb. In 1994, she and her husband returned to the Strong homestead in East Montpelier. In her younger years, she was a member of the Randolph Chapter of Rainbow Girls and later joined the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Friendly Circle of East Montpelier until her health limited her activities. She was predeceased by her father and mother, her sister Nelda Stevens, her brother Neil L Stevens Jr., her sisters-in-law Beverly Azur and Alice Jean (Strong) Nadeau and her nephew Steven Brent Carmichael. She is survived by her husband Frederick Strong of East Montpelier; son Frederick Neil Strong of Lincoln, Neb.; and daughter Nancy Jean Barker and her husband James of Prince Frederick, Md. Also surviving are her grandchildren Sarah Strong and her husband Ross of Lincoln, Neb.; Jacob Strong and his wife Michelle of North Liberty, Iowa; Rebecca and Rachel Strong of Lincoln, Neb.; Hanna Barker of Westminster, Md.; and Emma Barker of Prince Frederick, Md.; brother-in-law Ronald Nadeau and his wife Sheryl of Petaluma, Calif.; and seven great- grandchildren, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Old Meeting House in East Montpelier Center Sunday, July 27, 2014, at 2 p.m. with a reception following at the Parish House.
