Nancy May Abbott (Smith)
Streeter
Sep 3, 1935 — Apr 26, 2026
Nancy May Abbott (Smith) Streeter, born on September 3, 1935, in East Calais, Vermont, passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 90. She was a beloved mother, aunt, and grandmother and a cherished friend whose legacy of kindness and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Nancy graduated from Cabot High School in 1953 and worked in the local cheese plant where she met and married her first husband, William Howard Neil Smith. They relocated to New Jersey and then Ithaca, New York, where Nancy worked at the Tompkins County Public Library. William passed away in 1971, and the family returned to Vermont in 1973. Nancy enjoyed a successful career as a deli manager at P&C/Price Chopper. During that time, she met and married her second husband, Chester George Streeter (who passed away in 1991). After retiring, she began a second career as a sales associate, working for many years at Kohl's in South Burlington, and then for the last 16 years, until October 2025, at TJ Maxx in Berlin. She could most often be found stationed at the jewelry counter where she enjoyed greeting and engaging with customers, always hoping to make them smile, especially if it seemed like they were having an off day. She was also very fond of her co-workers.
A resident of the Berlin Mobile Home Park until the devastating floods of 2023 that destroyed her home, Nancy then moved in with her daughter in East Montpelier, where she enjoyed a cozy apartment well away from any threat of flooding. Nancy was a lifetime bowler and participated in numerous leagues (most recently at Twin City Lanes, until the pandemic) and competed in tournaments around the state.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Judith (David) Thurlow of East Montpelier, and sons, Eric Smith (Jarret Delos Santos) of Hawaii and Albert Smith of Vergennes; her stepchildren, Kathleen (David) Smith of Bolton and Stephen Streeter of Waycross, Georgia; her step-grandchildren, Andrea Smith, Samatha Hathaway, Caulissa Smith, Mercedes Streeter, and Mallory Streeter; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom were very dear to her. Nancy was predeceased by her six older siblings and her stepson Roger Streeter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Vermont Home, Health, and Hospice.
Nancy will be deeply missed. She was kind, funny, determined, and she made a mean rhubarb custard pie. She was amazing.
