Michael J. Danko, 79, of Pioneer Apartments, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, VT.
He was born on August 14, 1929 in Elmont, NY, the son of John and Nora B.(Herite) Danko. He received catholic education in Huntington Station, NY and later went on to masonry trade school.
Mr. Danko served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was stationed in North Africa where he help build concrete airport runways. He was honorable discharged in 1953.
On August 28, 1954, he married Elizabeth M. DeJesu in Oyster Bay, NY. She predeceased him on February 24, 1985.
He worked as a union brick layer for a number of years before he purchased the Hendy Snack Bar on Berlin Street. He and Betty owned and operated the Danko Discount Beverage and Redemption Center on Berlin Street, Montpelier. After closing that business, worked again as a brick layer until retirement.
Mr. Danko was a member of St. Augustine Parish. He was also a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight.
Survivors include his daughter, Sheila Marineau and her husband, Mark of Barre Town; son, Michael J. Danko of South Barre, five grandchildren; Karen M. Mabe and her husband, Michael of Pleasant Garden, NC, Jessie Marineau of Barre Town, Louis E. Marineau II of Montpelier, Kristian Marineau of Carbondale, IL, and Emily Marineau of Barre Town; two great grandchildren, Dylan Banhner and Zoey Henry. Three sisters also survive him.
He was predeceased by his wife and a sister, Mary O'Brien.
Calling hours will be held from 7:00-9:00 on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, from St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Committal prayers will be offered at the Green Mount Cemetery following the mass.
