Obituary

Matthew Lissor, loving husband, devoted father, doting grandfather and loyal friend, died unexpectedly on Friday, Sept. 4. Born in Montpelier on March 13, 1962, to Hugh and Shirley Lissor, Matt was a student at U-32 High School when he met the love of his life, Lorelei Clarke. He was only 15 and she 13, but their love transcended youth, and they married on July 30, 1983. Son Tyson was born in 1984 and daughter Tila arrived two years later. Last February, Matt's family expanded further when Tila gave birth to granddaughter Khialyn. Family was everything to Matt, and he enjoyed his yearly anniversary camping trip with Lorelei, mountain biking with Tyson and taking walks with Tila and Khialyn, with whom he formed a deep bond from the day of her birth. They were often joined by the family dog, Mikaya. After serving in the U.S, Marines, Matt worked many years as a skilled stone mason, crafting lasting works of art from mountain boulders. In 2000, he joined the team at the Bolton Valley Ski Resort as a lift operator, eventually becoming lift operations supervisor, then moving into the lift maintenance department. But his work at Bolton was more than just a job. To Matt; it was a way of life, and he and his family developed lasting friendships with scores of neighbors and co-workers in the mountain community. He is predeceased by his parents, his mother-in-law Loretta Clarke, and step-brother Wendell "Skeets" Gerrish. Survivors include Lorelei, Tyson, Tila, Khialyn; step-father Wendell Gerrish, father-in-law Rod Clarke, brothers Robert and Mark Lissor, sisters Phyllis Winters, Cathie Freeman, Luanne Bailey and Carmel LaPlante, and Lorelei's siblings Chris, Adam and Don Clarke, Kelly Deis, Jennifer Miller and Tony McFarlin. Calling hours are scheduled from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Guare Funeral Home, 30 School St., Montpelier, with a memorial service Thursday at 11 a.m., followed by a gathering of friends and family at The Ponds at the Bolton Valley Ski Resort. Memorial contributions can be made to Vermont Special Olympics, 368 Avenue D, Williston, VT 05495.
