Obituary

Mary Margaret (Heney) Wheeler, 87, died June 26, 2014 at Birchwood Nursing Home in Burlington. Mary was born on May 15, 1927 at Heaton Hospital in Montpelier, VT to William J. & Ruth (Ledden) Heney. She also spent her last few years in the same building, Heaton Woods, now an assisted living facility. She was educated in Montpelier and received her college degree from Trinity College in Burlington, VT. Mary married Charles Robert Wheeler on May 10, 1952 at St. Augustine Catholic Church sharing 49 years together raising their family in Montpelier. Mary spent the majority of her adult life on College St. in Montpelier where she and her husband owned many properties. Mary was the proud mother of 3 boys (James Robert, John Kingsley and Robert Lawrence). She doted on all family, caring for her parents, siblings, her in-laws, many aunts, uncles and grandchildren. Mary is survived by two sons, John Kingsley Wheeler and his wife, Kelly Shawn North of Sarasota, Florida; Robert Lawrence Wheeler of Montpelier, VT; grandchildren, James Alexander Wheeler and his wife, Addie Wheeler; Christopher Mcduff Wheeler; and Sarah Kingsley Wheeler; and a great grandson, Benjamin Wheeler. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary (McGinn) Heney of Montpelier and Edith Shedd of Calais, VT; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Bob Wheeler on October 5, 2001, son, Jim Wheeler on December 30, 2012; brother, Lawrence Patrick "Bud" Heney on June 1, 2002 and a sister, Ruth A. Heney on November 19, 2011. Mary was very social and involved with VT politics as well as conducting State House tours into her 80th year and was also a member of the Montpelier Garden Club. She frequently travelled, especially enjoying Cape Cod, Florida and Woodbury Lake where her family had long time residences. You could find her collecting shells on beaches, paddling canoes in search of turtles and loons, driving back roads gathering wildflowers and joyfully teaching her grandchildren to fish. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 8th at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier. A memorial reception will follow the Mass in the parish hall. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury, VT. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in Mary's name, the family asks that you consider Heaton Woods Activity Fund, 10 Heaton Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.
