Obituary

Berlin, VT

Mary Jean "Jackie" Mills-Brown died peacefully surrounded by her family on the evening of July 4th, 2024, at CVMC in Berlin Vt. She was born in Boston Massachusetts on March 18th, 1945. She grew up in Boston, with some time spent in Maine. Through her church activities she met Paul Brown. On August 8th, 1963, they were married and eloped to Star Island, in the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire/Maine. After a reception on the main island, Paul rowed them across a small channel to a private cabin where they spent their honeymoon, returning to Boston to live.

After Paul graduated from B.U. and their first child was born, they moved to Vermont. First St. Johnsbury, then Warren where their second child was born, Waterbury, and eventually settling in Montpelier. They were active members of Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier from the early 70's to their deaths.

Jackie was a woman of many talents and gifts. She could knit, crochet, sew, draw, and had a wonderful way with words. From the clothing she made her sons to the tapestry she created for her church, there were always pieces of beauty. Her sense of humor and whit were not easily matched, along with her knowledge of classical history. Although often she leaned toward privacy, she sure knew how to throw a gathering, and became quite well known for the holiday open house she would host at the Gould Hill residence in Montpelier.

She was a devoted mother and wife, always ensuring the family had what it needed while always nurturing play and learning. Jackie's love for her granddaughters was unmatched.

She was predeceased by her husband Paul and her son Christian. She is survived by her son Peter and his wife Amanda, their two daughters Amelia and Emily, of Williamstown, and her granddaughter Maegan Smith and her husband Ryan Bass of Maryland.

There will be a small service for the family on July 20th, and a larger prayer service at Christ Episcopal Church in September when vacations are through and the whole of the church can celebrate her.
