Obituary

Montpelier, VT Marianna Musillo, who died on August 5th at 101 years old, was born in southern Italy. She married Michael Musillo, and at the age of 22, immigrated to the Bronx, New York City, with her first-born daughter. In the New World, Marianna raised two daughters, and created a genial household, welcoming family and friends. Upon the death of her husband, she eventually remarried, moved to Woodstock, New York, and finally to Montpelier, Vermont. Through the decades, she traveled annually to her hometown to visit her family in Italy. After living independently until she was 98 years old, she entered Woodridge Nursing Home. In her remarkably long life, Marianna passed from hearing the town crier proclaim the news to receiving the daily newspaper at her door and from traveling in horse and carriage to owning her own car. To communicate with her family in Italy she waited three or four months for sea mail (which arrived censured during World War II). Air Mail speeded communication to an astonishing two weeks, until finally Marianna stood in wonder at the marvel of E-mail. The passing of Marianna marks the end of an immigrant era of men and women who left families and plunged ahead to new countries and a blankness in communication, except for mail. Marianna deeply regretted that after her emigration in 1932, she never saw her mother again, nor heard her voice. Endowed with an open, resourceful temperament and overcoming the particular hardships of an immigrant in those times, Marianna lived a richly fulfilled life on two continents. Marianna is survived by her two daughters, Irene Mitchell and Dolores Mita, their husbands, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Family grave side service was held on August 8, 2011 at Green Mount Cemetery, Montpelier. Contributions in her memory may be made to Woodridge Nursing Home, PO Box 550, Barre, VT 05641
