Montpelier, VT
Avis Aja Webster, 92, of Thorpe Avenue, St. Albans, VT died Saturday, November 17, 2007, at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided since December 23, 1997.
She was the only child of Jesus and Maria (Fernandez) Aja. Her mother died while she was a very young child and she was raised by her aunt, Angeles Fernandez, who came to this country from Spain to take care of her. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1934 and from Burlington Business College in 1936. She was employed by the New England Telephone Company in Montpelier and became a supervisor.
On September 3, 1943 she married Burton E. Webster of St. Albans in Springfield, MA. He established the Webster and Earle Auto Body Shop and she continued working at New England Telephone. After a few years she decided to become a homemaker. She volunteered as a Gray Lady at the Kerbs Memorial Hospital, took oil painting lessons from Professor Colburn at UVM and entered some paintings at art displays. She and her husband enjoyed sponsoring Fresh Air Children. Mr. Webster died in January of 1986.
She is survived by two cousins-Angles Aja Zorzi of Montpelier and Antonia Aja, Jr. of Bradenton, Fl– who are really more like siblings as they grew up together— and by several other cousins and relatives.
At her request there will be no calling hours and a private funeral will take place at Berlin Corner Cemetery in the spring.
Arrangements are in the care of Guare & Sons Funeral Home
