IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marguerite
Smyrski
January 12, 1924 – February 17, 2026
Marguerite P. Smyrski passed from this life at her home on February 17, 2026. She was 102 years old.
Marguerite was born in Derby, Vermont on January 12, 1924, the 6th of 8 children born to Louis and Bertha (Couture) Provost. She attended grammar school at Notre Dame de Merci in Rock Island, QC and graduated from Derby Academy (VT) in 1943. Based on the fact that she was equally fluent in French and English and could relate to people from all walks of life, she was hired to work in the Newport office of Prudential Insurance Company. She remained there until her marriage.
In 1953, Marguerite married John Smyrski, a civil engineer from West Rutland, and they moved to Montpelier in 1958. John died suddenly in 1965, leaving her with three small children. In 1976, she married David Miller of Rutland; they later divorced.
Marguerite was best known as a real estate agent in Central Vermont. She went to work with Bud Heney and Bob Wheeler at Heney & Sons Realty in 1971 and remained with the company through 1995. She became a source of knowledge about the streets and homes around Central Vermont and even in her later years, was often greeted by people in the grocery store who remarked, “You sold me my first house”.
Marguerite was a long-time member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of the Nelson Pond Homeowners Association. She was an avid bridge-player, playing with groups through the Montpelier Senior Activity Center and privately. She remained fluent in both French and English, including serving as a Court interpreter for the Vermont State Courts in the 1990’s.
Besides her husband, John, Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, her six brothers and her sister, and John’s eight brothers and sisters. She was also predeceased by her dear friends Janice Hill, Rae McGinn and Janet Moyse. She is survived by her children, Martha, of Montpelier; Paula (Russell Hahn) also of Montpelier; and John (Mary Kay Wieler) of Lebanon, NH. She is also survived by her two grandchildren Jack, of Newton, MA and Clara, a student at McGill University; her sister-in-law Sally Provost of Singer Island, FL and Sheffield, VT, and 22 nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Spring. Notice of the date and place will be published in this paper.
Arrangements are being handled by Guare and Sons. Guests can leave remembrances at www.guareandsons.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Central VT Home Health & Hospice (www.cvhhh.org)
