Obituary

Montpelier, VT Margaret Nora (Barnett) Highter, 97, of Montpelier, VT, passed away on Wednesday, November 4th, surrounded by her family. Margaret was born in Cabot, VT, on May 3, 1918, the daughter of the late John Barnett and Mary (Goslant) Barnett. Margaret attended school in Cabot and graduated from St. Michael's High School, Montpelier, in June of 1936. Following her graduation, she worked in North Troy at a local bank. On July 28, 1941, she married Clement A. (Ted) Highter in Montpelier, VT. They moved to Bristol, CT, where Clement Highter worked for Pratt and Whitney in the New Departure area. They later moved to Montpelier, where they made their home and raised their four daughters. During those years, Margaret worked at Vermont College and the U.S. Post Office. Margaret was a devoted mother and wife to her family and a loving grandmother to her ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Over the years, she had many friends and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. She enjoyed her Time Magazine, her garden, and her sweets. Her delicious ginger cookies were fiercely coveted by all her grandchildren. She loved to be on the go to see new and different places and never turned down an invitation to travel. She was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church and an active member of the St. Vincent's DePaul Society. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Lillian Bell; her brothers John Barnett, Warren Barnett, Lute Barnett, Norbert Barnett, and Glendon Barnett; sons-in-law Jeffry Turner and Gary Tyo; and her husband, Clement Highter, in 2001 to whom she was married for 60 years. "Coonie", as her friends called her, is survived by her children Rae Marie Jacobs of South Burlington; Jerrilee Turner Silk (Jack) of Bonita Springs, FL; Laurey Tyo of Colchester; and Frances McAvoy (Gary) of Barre. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Karen Weed (Ray), Sarah Trombley (Mark), Jeffry Turner (Leslie), Janis Turner, Jason Turner, Tricia Tyo (James), Craig Tyo, Morgan Matson (Einar), Justin Lee (Pat), and Kristin Eisensmith (Chris) along with 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Guare and Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier on Saturday, November 21st at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow immediately after at The Steak House Restaurant on Route 302 (Barre-Montpelier Road). There are no calling hours. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to a charity of choice.
