Obituary

Montpelier, VT Marc Reuben Sindell died Thursday, July 22, at his home in Montpelier. He was born Nov. 26, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, growing up in Brighton Beach with his parents, Manny and Leonore, and his older brother, Allen. The family moved to Johnstown and Chester, Pennsylvania but Brighton Beach was always home to Marc. He was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School. He went to Brooklyn College and then transferred to Goddard College in 1969. This is what brought Marc to Vermont where he made his home for the rest of his life. Marc was a unique and unforgettable individual. He was gentle, generous, and kind. He had a natural curiosity about everyone he met. His lifestyle was simple, almost spartan. He was an avid photographer. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and thoroughbred racing. Ask Marc almost any trivia question, especially concerning sports, particularly baseball, and he would have the answer. He was the lifeline you needed to call if ever a contestant on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". It was often suggested by his close friends, in all seriousness, that he should open a shop and hang out a sign advertising "Expert On Everything". Marc loved good food and wine. He was an audiophile, early computer user, and lover of jazz, particularly the music of Chet Baker. Marc loved to swim and spent many hours at Wrightsville Reservoir. He loved to take long, contemplative walks throughout Montpelier and, when he could, in the country. Marc loved the natural beauty and open farmland of Vermont and lived his life in ways to protect it. Marc's compassion, wit, and unique wisdom will be missed. He was that special person who could find and share the cosmic vision at the confluence of The Three Stooges, Chet Baker, and Burt Lancaster as THE SWIMMER. Marc returned to New York City in the early seventies for several years where he worked at The New York Times. But his love of Vermont and his friends here brought him back. About six years ago, he moved to Los Angeles attracted by the warmth of the sun, the calming rhythm of the ocean, and the fantasy, however remote, of maybe breaking into the movie business. Marc was looking for different ways to address inner turmoils. Marc could be quite the character. The magnetic realities of Vermont and the peace he could find here brought him back after less than a year in L.A. Marc had a varied employment history which, in addition to The New York Times, included working at the Bean Bag (predecessor to State Street Market), The Tavern Motor Inn (now Capitol Plaza Hotel), and Twin City Subaru. He will best be remembered for his long history of working intermittently over the past 30 years at Buch Spieler Music in Montpelier. Marc is survived by many who loved him dearly including: his brother Allen and his wife Louise Sindell of Danbury, Conn.; Allen's son, Andrew Sindell of Westchester, N.Y.; Allen's daughter, Jamie Schmitt, her husband Keith and their baby daughter Jordana of Fayetteville, N.Y.; the close 'extended' families of Fred Wilber of Marshfield, Dennis Wilber of Plainfield, and Paul Shper of Barre; and the many friends Marc has made over the past 41 years in Vermont. Contributions in Marc's memory can be made to Central Vermont Community Action Council (www.cvcac.org). All who would like to share in remembering Marc are invited to a memorial service to be held at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier on Sunday, August 8, at 11a.m.
