Malik Jacob Hunter, 17, of Barre Street, died suddenly on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the Central Vermont Hospital.
He was born in Darby, PA on February 21, 1991, the son of RunningDeer Sun Hunter-Bailey.
He was currently employed with the Vermont Youth Conservation Corp. He previously attended Union 32 High School in East Montpelier. Malik also worked part time in construction and was completing his high school degree.
Malik was a deeply spiritual person which was often reflected in his writings. He was a published poet and having an interest in music, he also had written a number of musical lyrics. He enjoyed sports, including basketball and football. Malik was looking forward to turning 18 so that he could try out for the Vermont Ravens football team.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Lance and RunningDeer Sun Hunter-Bailey. Grandmother; Paij Wadley-Bailey of Montpelier and Grandparents; Jean Munch Hoenthaner and Edwin Hoenthaner of Tennessee; sisters, Valeshka Anlyan-Hunter of Montpelier, VT, Aneiszka Hunter of Redlanes, CA, Briana Lapan of Montpelier, Shahiyela Hunter of Montpelier and Jerusha Gillespie of Charleston, S.C.; brothers, Darius Hunter of Seattle, WA, Obadiah Hoenthaner of Humbolt, CA, Jonah Hunter of Tahoe, CA, Caleb Hunter of Springfield, MA, Jordan Hunter of Bainbridge, NY, and Martin Patterson of Montpelier, VT
There will be no calling hours. There will be an informal candle light vigil beginning at 5:00 pm on Friday at the Vermont College Green for youths and young adults. A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Montpelier. Committal services will immediately follow at Green Mount Cemetery.
