MONTPELIER: Madeline Hastings Farnham, 102, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Wake Robin in Shelburne, VT. She was born in Morristown Corners, VT on January 7, 1908 to Elie and Lucie (Laraway) Hastings.
She attended North Wolcott Grammar School and graduated from Peoples Academy in Morrisville in 1925. From 1925 to 1926, she attended Simmons College in Boston and Bay Path Institute in Springfield , MA. She continued her education for four summers at the University of Vermont and the University of Maine.
Madeline taught at Euclid Business College in Brooklyn, NY and Peoples Academy in Morrisville, VT from 1929 to 1933; Montpelier High School from 1933 to 1943; and was
Appointed by Governor William Wills as Acting Merit System supervisor and acting Personnel Director for the State of Vermont from 1943 to 1945.
She married Stanley H. Farnham on November 12, 1945, in Morrisville, VT.
She is Past Matron of the Rob Morris Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary; the Vermont 251 Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Madeline is survived by nieces Norma Brogdon of Dewy Rose, Georgia; grand nieces Heidi Ruff and her husband Douglas of Jacksonville FL, Mary Smith and her husband Timothy of White River Junction VT, Elizabeth Prevost and her husband Gary of Keene NH, Melissa Gardner, Donna Rasmussen and her husband Anders of Montgomery VT; great nephews David Brogdon and his wife Connie of North Fort Myers FL and Jeffrey Hastings and his wife Elizabeth of Myrtle Beach SC; 17 great-grand nieces and nephews and 15 great great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother, Lucie, in 1963; her father, Elie Hastings in 1969; her husband Stanley Farnham on October 21, 1984; her brother, Raymond Hastings in 1982 and her nephew Raymond Hastings, JR, in 1995.
A committal service will be held on Friday, November 12, 2010 at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier.
