Montpelier, VT
Lucille Colby Spaulding, 95, of Heaton Woods in Montpelier, joined her son and husband in Heaven on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. She died peacefully at her home while surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter.
Lucille was born on January 20, 1922 in Franklin, NH, daughter of Charles and Eva Colby. She grew up on her family farm in Tilton, NH and graduated from Tilton Academy in 1940. She furthered her education in Boston to pursue her career as a medical secretary. In 1942 she came to Montpelier to visit her sister; she met her sweetheart John C. Spaulding and never left Vermont. On July 4th, 1943 they were married at Camp Breckenridge, KY while he was serving in the US Army.
During her career she worked with Dr. Robert Chastney at Montpelier High School; Dr. Rosaire Bisson in Montpelier, as a lab technician at Heaton Hospital and with Dr. Porter Dale in Montpelier. After retirement she spent time working with her favorite boss, her husband, at Allstate Insurance in Montpelier.
Lucille's deep Christian faith guided her, comforted her and was a wonderful example to her family and those whom she met on her journey through life.
Life changed in 1983 with the death of her husband and she filled that void with new passions. Through the help of her friend, Elaine Larosa, she discovered the amazing world of quilting. She never met a fabric she didn't love. She spent hours in happy creative thought with intricate, complex quilting patterns and this led to hundreds of projects which she has given to children, grandchildren and complete strangers.
Her other passions included playing cribbage, painting pictures while at camp at Peacham Pond, knitting and reading many books per week until the near complete loss of her eyesight changed her world.
In 2006 Lucille made the decision to move to Heaton Woods where she lived out the remaining years of her life. As the years went by, Lucille became the recipient of loving, compassionate care and developed lasting meaningful relationships with the Heaton Woods community. The family would like to thank the staff from the bottom of their hearts for the great care and love they gave to their mother and them. The family would also like to thank Dr. Peter Dale for his compassionate care through the years, he was her favorite.
Lucille is survived by her children: Sherry Carver of East Montpelier; David Spaulding and his wife Leslie of Montpelier; Barbara Spaulding and her husband Anthony Ellis of Punta Gorda, FL and daughter in law Christine Spaulding of Lyndon Center. Her grandchildren: Karen Adams, Kathy Carver and Danny Carver. Benjamin Spaulding, Stephanie Dwyer, Samuel Spaulding and Alex Spaulding. Matthew Spaulding and Bradley Spaulding. She also is survived by 6 great grandchildren.
Lucille was predeceased by her husband, her son Douglas Spaulding, son-in-law Dennis Carver, beloved sister Barbara Roberts, and Lucille's brothers Dick and Sherwood Colby. Lucille was the last living aunt to many, many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, June 3rd at the New Life Assembly, 304 Hill Street, Barre, VT. Arrangements are in the care of Guare & Sons Funeral Home.
