Louis J. Gendron, 85, formerly of Calais and recently of Forest Drive in Montpelier, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at his home.
He was born on June 27, 1923 in Lingwich, PQ, Canada, the next to the youngest child of Henri and Anna (Turgeon) Gendron. His family moved to Montpelier when he was 3 years old and they eventually settled on a farm in East Hardwick. In 1938, he moved back to Montpelier and he attended St. Michael's High School graduating in 1942.
During high school he lived at the Greave's Farm in Montpelier, and eventually took over management of the farm until it sold in 1968. He retired at the age of 70, having worked for Wyman Gas and Petroleum Products on the Northfield Road for 15 years.
On July 28, 1947, Louis married Marjorie L. Searles at St. Augustine's Church. In 1968 they moved to a home in Calais which they restored and lived in for 40 years.
Mr. Gendron was member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Capital City Grange where he served as Master. He was also a member of the Pamona & State Grange.
He loved the outdoors, gardening, and the maple sugaring season. He enjoyed hosting his annual sugaring party for family and friends. Louis was a "Jack of all Trades" and loved working and building with his hands.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie L. Gendron of Montpelier; a daughter, Cecile Gendron of Montpelier; son, Louis R. Gendron and his wife, Judy of Berlin; grandchildren, Lucas R. Gendron and his wife, Amy of Calais, and Maggie Gendron of Berlin; sisters, Eva Page of West Lebanon, NH and M. Cecile Brackett of Hudson Falls, NY.
A Memorial service will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. Committal service will be held at the Main Street Cemetery in Hardwick at the convenience of the family.
