Lois M. Toby, 88, died April 16, 2015 at her home. She was born on November 29, 1926 at Heaton Hospital in Montpelier, the daughter of Earl A. and Nettie (Shuttle) Slayton. Lois was brought up on the family farm in East Montpelier. She graduated from the Adamant School, and then from Montpelier High School in 1946. Lois lived most of her life in the Adamant area.
Lois married Elbridge M. Toby in 1947. They had 48 wonderful years together and raised 3 children. Elbridge died in 1995.
Lois was manager of the Adamant Coop Store, Treasurer of the Adamant Credit Union and Postmaster at the Adamant Post Office for 20 years. She retired in 1988 to spend more time with her family. She was also active in community affairs and was a local historian.
She enjoyed helping people, traveling and playing cards. Lois also enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and the young people in the village.
Lois was predeceased by her parents, husband and three brothers, Wilfred E. Slayton; Maurice H. Slayton and Richard F. Slayton; as well as one sister, Flora C. (Slayton) Chase; grandson, Timothy Smith. She was also predeceased by Wilfred's wife, Ina; Maurice's wife, Mildred and Flora's husband, Preston Chase.
Lois is survived by two sons, Norman E. Toby and his wife, Carolyn; Lester G. Toby and his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Cheryl A. Johnson and her husband, Hugh; 7 grandchildren, Alison Brockway and her husband, Keith; Erin Toby; Corrine Toby; Angela Toby; Ann Hunt; Jennifer Smith; and Stacey Massey and her husband, John; as well as 13 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jean Smith; cousins and nieces and nephews.
A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, April 21st at Guare & Sons/Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. Calling hours will be from 12 Noon until the hour of the funeral at 2:00 pm. A memorial reception will follow the service at the Montpelier Elks Club.
