Obituary

Groton, VT Lois L. Smith, 80, of Groton, VT passed away peacefully on December 28th at Rowan Court Nursing Home. She was born in Montpelier, VT on January 16, 1934, the daughter of Perley A. Leslie and Glenys Colt. After graduating from Montpelier High School in 1951 Lois was employed at National Life Insurance Company. She married Merle B. Smith and later became a parent and a full time homemaker. She was active in 4-H cooking, teaching several days a week for 10 years. She also served as Treasurer of Plainfield United Methodist Church and Co- Treasurer of Cutler Memorial Library. Some of Lois's happiest times were serving the many and varied residents of Plainfield as their Town Clerk – an elected position which she held twenty-three years before retiring to Lake Groton. As the Town Clerk, people would come to Lois for happy reasons, such as getting marriage, hunting and fishing licenses, registering to vote, or reporting large game taken during Vermont's hunting seasons. Lois loved family camping at Stillwater Campground in Groton State Forest. She would move her family into the campground as soon as the Twinfield schools were closed, and the family would spend the entire summer in the campground, returning home the night before school opened for the following school year. Even the birth of an infant (Dana) couldn't keep Lois from camping the entire summer. Lois and her husband also had an affinity for Jitterbug dancing and they became great appreciators of figure skating. At the time of her death, Lois owned over 2,000 unique sets of Salt and Pepper shakers, which she displayed, year-round, in a small building built by Merle. Lois is survived by two sons, Dwaine Smith and his wife Susan Pelkey Smith of Shelburne, VT, Dana Smith and his wife Mary Smith of Groton, VT, as well as her daughter Diane Dubberly and her husband Carl of Amherst NH, numerous grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents, her brother Glenn Leslie and her son Dale. Her family invites her friends to join them in a celebration of life open house, which will be held Saturday, January 17th at Plainfield Opera House in Plainfield, VT from 2-4pm. There will be no calling hours. Honoring Lois's preference, please do not send flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter, 75 Talcott Rd, Suite 40, Williston, VT 05495.
