Obituary

Montpelier, VT Leonard P. "Buddy" Roberts, Jr., of Montpelier, died peacefully on Friday September 7th, with his family at his side. Born April 29, 1922, in Bridgewater, Mass., he was the son of Leonard P. Sr. and Ethel Smith Roberts. Leonard graduated from high school in Arlington, MA. After serving in the Army in World War II, he moved to Craftsbury to help his parents run the Craftsbury General Store. It was there that he met and married Mary Paterson, of East Craftsbury. Leonard attended Suffolk University and Lyndon State College. He had many different jobs over the years, including time spent working as a newspaper reporter for the Caledonia Record. He ended his career working for the State of Vermont, in the Public Records Department. Leonard had a great sense of humor. People enjoyed stopping in to see him at Public Records, where he always had a joke or a good story to tell. Leonard was a devoted father and loved taking his children fishing, skating, to the beach or anywhere else that they wanted to go. He and his wife Mary enjoyed playing bridge with friends and spending time with family. Leonard had a wonderful singing voice. He sang with the Barre Choraleers, at church and in front of the VT Legislature. Leonard spent the last 8 years of his life at Heaton Woods, in Montpelier, with people who would become his second family. His sense of humor and singing voice will be greatly missed there as well. Leonard was pre-deceased by his wife Mary, two of his children Leonard Roberts of Barre and Margaret Roberts of Montpelier and his brother Gordon. He leaves behind two children, Jennifer Roberts of Newton, MA and Geoffrey Roberts of Montpelier and his brother Donald S. Roberts of New York City. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family. A funeral service will be held at 2:00, on Saturday, September 15th, at The United Church of Craftsbury, Craftsbury Common VT. A reception will follow in the church's Parish Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Heaton Woods, 10 Heaton St, Montpelier, VT 05602. Guare & Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier is in charge of arrangements.
