Lee Stevenson, of Calais, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2007, at
Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, Vermont. Lee was born on January 2,
1933, in Los Angeles, California to Noel C. and Hazel May (Stutz)
Stevenson.
Lee grew up in Northern California and she enjoyed working on the
family's almond orchard and horseback riding with her sister Karen near
the Feather River. In her late 20s Lee moved to Calais, Vermont where
she spent the majority of her life with the exception of a few years in
California. Though she was born in California, she always considered
Calais her home and loved living in the Green Mountain State.
Lee was one of the first to support Nina Gitana, who established Kirpal
Ashram in 1959. Lee was initiated into the Path of the Masters and
performed many years of service for the ashram, now called Wawasiki,
which means Sacred Place.
Lee had a deep and profound respect for all of nature and its beauty.
Lee loved to hike in the woods and identify different types of trees
and bird species. Often, Lee would take a break and sketch something
picturesque such as a waterfall, wildlife, or a mountain range, etc.
Also, Lee was extremely artistic and creative and truly enjoyed all aspects
of carpentry as well as building rustic furniture and bird houses. In
addition, Lee crafted various wood carvings such as walking staffs and
bowls, soapstone carvings, and beautiful silver jewelry.
Lee was predeceased by her parents, Noel C. and Hazel May (Stutz)
Stevenson; sister, Karen (Stevenson) Sceales; brother, Edward Stevenson; and
her dogs, Kaleb and Echo.
Lee is survived by her nephew, Conrad Sceales; niece, Kerensa Sceales
Patel (Abhijeet); great nephew, Akash Patel; dearest friends, Nancy
Maresh (Judith Blair); David Champoux; Laura Thompson; Natalie Wilson;
Barbara Padgett; Charlotte Gilruth; Ginna Bourisseau; Laura Atkinson; Pam

Here's a short story we (Conrad and Kerensa) will always remember of
our Aunt Lee:
In the wee hours of a mid summer morning twenty-three years ago in
Calais, Vermont, the two of us, our Mother Karen, Aunt Lee and Grandmother
Hazel, drove off into the woods. The night before Aunt Lee explained it
was time to start stocking the coffers for the approaching winter. So
off we went bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for a day of adventure.
Aunt Lee was always full of energy and insight when it came to the
woods. Aunt Lee did all of the chainsaw work, falling trees and bucking
rounds, while the rest of us hand passed rounds of wood with one of us
in the back of the dump truck neatly stacking the wood. By late
afternoon we were closing in on the grand prize of the day, a cord of
hardwood. Tired, sweaty, and a few blisters later we had completed our task.
It was now time to celebrate which meant a trip to the Maple Corner
store. We bought two half gallons of ice cream and a six pack of Pepsi
in which we would all share joyously while simultaneously laughing when
recalling the days trials and tribulations; a wonderful way to conclude a
very special day in the woods with Aunt Lee and family.
