Lawrie Byron Morrison, 67 of East Montpelier, VT, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA.
Lawrie was born September 13, 1943, in Peacham, VT, the son of Paul Knight Morrison, Jr. and Agnes (Messenger) Morrison.
He joined the Air force in 1961 which eventually brought him to Mcguire Air Force Base in New Jersey where he met his wife Mary. After honeymooning in Vermont, the two moved back to the family farm before residing in Williamstown for 9 years. Lawrie worked with his brother Paul in the carpet industry, before moving to East Montpelier in 1975. In 1979 he started The Gallery of Cabinets. In his younger days, he played in a local band called "The Fugitives" touring Vermont on nights and weekends. Being raised on a farm, he had a never-quit attitude, and thrived at everything he did. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and children, playing golf, bowling, snowshoeing, kayaking, and sailing on Lake Champlain with family and friends. After a long battle with COPD , he had a lung transplant in 2005. With his second chance at living an active life, he enjoyed doing all of the things he loved plus those he couldn't do prior to his transplant.
Lawrie was a parishioner of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Montpelier as well as a member of the Montpelier Elks Club and the American Legion.
Lawrie was very generous, and kind hearted. He would do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat. His sense of humor was matched by no one. He could walk into a room full of strangers, and know every one of them by the end of the night. Those who knew him will be forever touched by his generosity and kindness.
He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 46 years, Mary Wilson Morrison; their three sons, Michael Lawrie Morrison and his wife, Jamie (Lemoine), Springfield, MA; Robert Brian Morrison and his wife, Regina (Santos), Southborough, MA; and Christopher Andrew Morrison and his fiancé, Patti Austin, Barre Town, VT; grandchildren, Ryan Michael Morrison; Jacob Lawrie Morrison; Michelle Bush and her husband, Jere; and Daniel Champagne; great grandchildren, Hunter Champagne and Jenna Bush; his siblings, Paul Morrison and his wife, Mary; Gilmore Morrison and his partner, Joe Aldorisio; and Cheryl Clark; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Respecting Lawrie's wishes, there are no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Montpelier followed by private burial at Doty Cemetery in East Montpelier.
