Lawrence R. Weeks, 89, of Gould Hill Road, died on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center.
He was born on June 5, 1921 in Hardwick, VT, the son of Robert and Hazel (Taylor) Weeks. He attended schools in Harwick and Graniteville.
On February 24, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was a truck driver. He was part of the Northern Solomons Campaign and was the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was also awarded a purple heart for injuries sustained from a grenade explosion. During his tour, he survived bouts of Malaria 18 different times. On September 17, 1945, he was honorably discharged at Fort Devens, MA.
On February 19, 1946, he married Carmen Garcia in Graniteville, VT. She predeceased him on May 11, 1995.
He worked in the Whitmore and Morse quarries and retired from Rouleau's Granite Shed in Barre.
He was an excellent fisherman and a wonderful father to all of his children and step children. He was a fan of local softball and was often found at the field during summer evenings watching the games. He was also a member of St. Augustine's Church and St. Sylvester's Church.
Survivors include his son, Brad Weeks of Montpelier; daughter, Barbara Parsons of Cascade, MT; sons, Gary Field of Middlesex, VT; sister, Leona Philip, and 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Cindy Field; and grandson, Casey Casavant, who died in the Iraq War. He was also predeceased by son, Lonnie Field; siblings, Maxine Eastman, Burnace Grant, Carroll Weeks, and Donald Taylor.
