Lawrence E. Cheever, Sr., 82, of Berlin died of cancer at Central Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, with his loving wife Maggie at his side.
Larry was born February 6, 1925, in Montpelier. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Ruth (Burnham) Cheever and by his sister Regina Walbridge. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Ray) Cheever, his sons Lawrence Jr. of Hampten, ME, and David of Augusta, ME and his daughters, Nancy Barrett of Grand Isle, Vermont and Janet Walmsley of Bristow, Virginia. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He retired after 37 years from New England Tel. and Tel. as an account executive. He was then employed as administrator of telecommunications for the State of Vermont for two years. Larry was an avid golfer, bowler, and bridge player. Many will remember he shared his love and knowledge of bridge as well as golf in his many years at The Senior Center and with the Elks. Some will also know he had earned one Gorham point and made one hole-in-one!
Larry enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps for the duration of WWII, from 1942-1945. He saw action in the South Central Pacific and made long lasting friendships with his fellow Marines. He was an active member of the Elks, the American Legion, and the VFW. He was a communicant and usher at St. Augustine Catholic Church for many years.
There will be no calling hours. The Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am on Friday, January 11, 2008 at St. Augustine Church, followed by a gathering of friends and relatives at the Elks Club in Montpelier.
In lieu of flowers, Larry asked that contributions in his memory be made to St. Augustine Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.
