Laura Adams, a resident of Montpelier for 96 years, passed away at The Arbors in Shelburne at the age of 102 on December 1, 2014.
Laura (aka "Locket") was born on Sept 27, 1912 in Montpelier, Vt. to John P. Adams and Laura Ropes Adams. Her mother died when she 6 years old and she was subsequently raised by her step mother, Eliza Adams. She was born and grew up in her home at 126 State St in Montpelier, a house now used as offices by the State of Vermont. It was in this house that she rode out the 1927 flood in the attic as waters cascaded through the second floor. Laura was employed by the Union Mutual Insurance Co for over 45 years.
In her younger years, Laura was one of the pioneer skiers on Mt Mansfield. She hiked the Toll Road before there were ski lifts and then continued to enjoy skiing as the Mountain was developed. She skied with other ski pioneers such as Charlie Lord, Abner Coleman, and Art Goodrich all of whom were instrumental in the development of skiing on Mt. Mansfield. Laura passed on her love of skiing to three of her nephews, Bill, Steve, and Jim who continue to enjoy this life long sport. In addition to skiing, Laura was an avid golfer, playing in amateur tournaments throughout the Vermont. She played golf regularly well into her 80's and was a member of the Montpelier Elks Country Club for over 60 years. In her later years, she served as a Director of the Montpelier Historical Society, as a guide at the Vermont State House and as a volunteer at the Vermont tourist information site on State Street in Montpelier.
Laura was predeceased by her brother John (Jack), sister Katherine, twin brother Charles and nephew John P. Adams III. She is survived by her nephews William Adams of Riverside, Conn., Stephen Adams of Stowe, James Adams of Jericho, and Frederick Adams of Des Moines, Iowa.
The family wishes to thank the staff at The Arbors in Shelburne for the wonderful care they gave Laura in the past few years.
