IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Josephine Loretta
Shumway
October 14, 1945 – July 5, 2025
WATERBURY
Josie (aka "Gram') passed away peacefully at Barre Gardens Nursing Home early Saturday morning after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Josie was born the first of ten children to Arthur F. Godfrey, Jr. and Clara (Walden) Godfrey of West Fairlee. She is survived by two daughters: Sally Jones of Northfield and Brenda Covey of Ticonderoga, New York. And by two sisters, Florence Keating of Essex Junction and Ramona Godfrey of Waterbury Center; and brother Frank Godfrey of Fairlee. She also leaves many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Josie will be greatly missed by many who knew her kind and gentle ways, especially her stepdaughter Val Shumway of Randolph, her very close "sister-friend" Harriet Hill of Missouri, and her new friend Patty.
Josephine was first a homemaker and then a housekeeper at several local motels and inns. She was particularly fond and proud of the three years she worked at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. She enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, shopping, old-timey county-and-western music, and car rides!
Josephine was pre-deceased by her son, Christopher Shumway, in 2021 and by six siblings - Art, Shirl, Carl, Fred, Judi, and Karen.
